8 Interesting Facts about American Sign Language (ASL)

American Sign Language has been developed for over 300 years by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Dated back to 1817, Gallaudet established the first national school for the deaf community in the US, which is known as American Asylum, located in Hartford, Connecticut. Today, American Sign Language is widely used through-out America and has become one of the most popular languages used within the court system. So, do you want to learn more about this interesting language? Let’s go through 8 interesting facts about American Sign Language.

  1. ASL is considered as a foreign language

ASL has its own vocabulary, grammar, word order and style and does not necessarily reflect English words.

ASL originates from France, that’s why French Sign Language is very similar to ASL.

  1. Sign language is not only a sign, gesture language but also a facial expression language

Sign Language users often use facial expression to change the meaning of signs.

For example:

Lowering eyebrows indicates who-what-where-when-why question.

Raising eyebrows indicates yes/no question.

  1. Different countries have different sign languages

Sign Language developed naturally from interactions between people and was influenced by their age, gender, culture and more.

There are about 6,000 different sign languages around the world.

  1. Children acquire sign language in the same way they acquire spoken language

Through interactions with people around them, deaf babies explore the hand shapes and movements that make up signs by babbling with their hands.

In the early developmental stages, deaf children often substitute easier handshapes for more difficult ones.

  1. ALS is the third most popular language in the US

Behind English, Spanish and Chinese, ALS is the fourth most widely used language in the US with around 2 million users.

  1. “I love you” in ASL is the combination of signs for the letters I,L and Y

  1. Gallaudet University in Washington DC provides most of their courses in ASL

Founded in 1864, Gallaudet University is the major university that offers education for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in the US. Most courses are taught in ASL even though they do have other learning programs in English.

  1. Beethoven became a talented composer and pianist even though he was hearing impaired.

Top 6 equipment rentals for a high-quality multilingual conference.

Headset and receivers

On a regular conference set-up, each audience member has a headset with which they listen to the live translation coming from the interpreters. The headset is often combined with a receiver to receive the signal from the microphone and convert it into sounds.

Beside the normal receivers and headset, American Language Services also provides “Digi-Wave Wireless Intercom System”. This system is a simultaneous, two-way, wireless team-teaching system that has many applications for two or more speakers to combine skills as a team. Its two way capabilities can facilitate open conversation with the push of a button.

Transmitter

A transmitter is electronic equipment that will broadcast a speaker’s voice, transferring it into audio signal that will be received by headsets. Our transmitter is particularly useful for providing hearing assistance to students in the classroom, employee training, tour group participants, business meetings and more.

Booth

Booths are needed to eliminate the sound of the interpreter’s voice from interfering with the speaker and audience. For simultaneous interpretation, it is recommended to have 1 booth per language. At American Languages Services, we provide you with two possibilities:

  • Table Top Sound Reduction Booth: fully enclosed on 3 sides. The interpreter sits behind the main front area in the booth and receives the feed from the speaker and transmits into the audience’s headsets. The Table Top Sound Reductions Booth is a cost effective and great way to reduce virtually all noise and distractions.
  • Fully Encapsulated Booths & Transmission Equipment: fully enclosed and is the most effective way to remove noise and interference from and to the interpreters and the audience. The interpreter sits inside the booth and receives the feed from the speaker and transmits into the audience’s headsets.

Our booths conform to ISO standard and can fit discreetly into most venues.

Recording equipment

A recorder is necessary when the content of the meeting is critical and must be saved. People forget key information that was said during the conference. More importantly, if there is any concern that important information may have been misunderstood during the meeting, it is recommended to store the interpretation for future reference.

Technician

A technician is an onsite expert who handles set up. During the conference, the technician supervises the system to ensure everything runs smoothly and the speech is transferred in a clear and natural way.

Our on-site professional Technicians have years of training and considerable knowledge in a wide array of audio equipment. Our technician team is widespread and covers almost all locations around the country. Wherever you are, we are able to assist you in all of your needs.

3 reasons why a good language services provider contributes to a successful conference?

Another new year is coming, bringing us new hopes, new plans and new ambitions for our lives. It’s a time when companies are busy with new-year conferences and meetings, discussing upcoming projects and strategic plans. Many companies have international clients that do not speak the same languages. It becomes more complicated when a meeting gathers participants from all around the world. A language barrier can lead to confusion. It can also cause delays.  Therefore, it is important to look for a language services provider. A good language services partner can handle problems concerning communication and coordination of a conference. So, what do you look for in a language services provider?

1/ A good language services provider will help with competent interpreters and translators, not simply native speakers.

To become an interpreter or translator for a language services company, every applicant has to go through a rigorous selection process. We opt for candidates who obtain an appropriate education together with proven experiences according to their expertise. With American Language Services, a good interpreter or translator is more than a native speaker, our interpreters are certified, experienced and credentialed in the U.S.

Many companies express concerns about the expertise of interpreters based on the topic of a conference. For example, a training program, a medical treatment, or a technical conference may require specific interpreters that have broad understanding about this topic. At American Languages Services, we commit to thoughtfully analyzing your needs. We strive to provide interpreters who are knowledgeable and prepared for any given industry.

2/ A good language services provider will helps you to save TIME

If you are in urgent need of an interpreter, either today or tomorrow, it can be an issue to find a well-qualified one. It can take time to schedule qualified talent.  I’m sure you don’t want to risk an important deposition or job interview at the hands of an unskilled interpreter; nor will you be satisfied if your documents are not well-translated. Cancellations as well become more annoying at the last minute. To help ensure a successful project American Language Services is here to help. We arrange the appointment with our well-qualified interpreters. Our company is renowned for delivering on-time, professional and high quality services.

3/ A good language services provider provides A-Z services

For a big conference, it’s important that an interpreter has access to a booth to reduce the surrounding sounds and concentrate on his/her job during the conference. More importantly, a transmitter will be needed for each interpreter so they can correctly hear the main speakers and formulate the best interpretation. To ensure audience, comprehension, it is necessary that each of them is equipped with a headset or receiver. Particularly, for big conferences that require interpretation into different languages, a receiver can help listeners to switch between different channels to hear the language they feel most comfortable with. American Language Services is here to offer you the full services that you are looking for, from exceptional interpreters and translators to necessary equipment, we even have qualified technicians to help during event set-up.

Why Simultaneous interpreters are a prerequisite for a successful multilingual conference?

What is a simultaneous interpreter?

Simultaneous interpreters are those who interpret the message from the speaker into the target language as fast as he can formulate it from the source language. There are never more than a few seconds of lag behind the speaker. In the meantime, the source language speaker speaks continuously without any interruptions.

Why are they important to organize a successful meeting?

A Simultaneous interpreter’s constant care is to complete his interpretation role within the time allowed by the pace of the source speech. Therefore, by using a simultaneous interpreter, the natural flow of the speaker is guaranteed and not interrupted.

What is the process of simultaneous interpretation?

Ideally, the interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth, speaking simultaneously a different language into a microphone as the audience listens to the broadcast of the speaker (via transmitters). Then, the interpretation is transmitted to the target audience members via their own set of receivers (or headsets)

How an Interpreter’s work contributes to multilingual meetings?

For meetings and conferences that gather people from different countries, an interpreter or interpreters is required to facilitate communication between participants who do not share a common language. The more languages spoken in the event, the more complicated the communication. As there might be multiple interpreters interpreting into several languages simultaneously, it is necessary for the listeners to set their receivers to the channel that contains the appropriate language. Thanks to the presence of interpreters, speakers of multiple languages can share the same experience irrespective of their language differences. The job of interpreter is to ensure the quality of communication in the meeting and to make sure the message is properly conveyed.

How American Languages Services can help you in delivering a qualified international conference?

With more than 30 years of experiences in the language industry, American Language Services has a team of highly qualified and professional interpreters. We understand what is needed to organize successful meetings in which language is a barrier. Our interpreting team covers more than 200 different languages around the world.
